The Cuyahoga County GOP said that bringing politically motivated charges against 2024 presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump will severely undermine America’s confidence in the judicial system.
According to a Fox News report, the Manhattan District Attorney‘s office requested a meeting with law enforcement on Friday in anticipation of a potential indictment of Trump this week.
The prospective indictment results from the protracted investigation into Trump’s alleged use of hush money in connection with porn star Stormy Daniels.
The Cuyahoga County GOP said that weaponizing law enforcement against political rivals has no place in America.
“Our nation was founded as a nation of laws, and the rule of law is what sets America apart. Weaponizing law enforcement against political rivals is a tactic used by tin-pot dictatorships. The tactic has no place in America. It is crucial that we have a judicial system that all Americans can trust. Make no mistake: bringing politically motivated charges against a former President will severely undermine that confidence and send a chilling effect through the entire system,” The Cuyahoga County GOP said.
To keep Daniels from disclosing her 2006 affair with Trump, Trump’s then-lawyer Michael Cohen allegedly paid her $130,000 as part of a non-closure agreement near the end of the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump allegedly then paid Cohen back in installments.
Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, is allegedly part of a “witch hunt” against Trump, according to the Trump campaign. The Cuyahoga County GOP said that it is both “disturbing” and “baffling” that Bragg might be on the verge of bringing charges against Trump when in reality he should be focusing on keeping New York City residents safe with their high crime rates.
“With crime out of control in New York, it is baffling that Bragg has focused his attention on President Trump rather than on keeping the people of New York City safe,” the Cuyahoga County GOP said.
The Cuyahoga County GOP praised Ohio’s elected officials who have spoken out early on this matter and urged those who have not to follow their lead.
“We applaud Senator JD Vance, Congressman Max Miller, and Congressman Jim Jordan for speaking out early on this matter and call on our other elected officials in Ohio to do the same,” the Cuyahoga County GOP said.
